The Digital Millennium Copyright Act is increasingly being used to claim jurisdiction over actions and territories that lie outside the United States. The question of linking ultimately concerns the freedom to link or deep-link on the web - whether the web will be possible & how effective it will be allowed to be. There are also links to pages dealing with other relatively new concerns such as protest and parody, cease and desist letters, fan fiction, reverse engineering and derivative works. Creative Commons In response to some of the issues raised in this 2003 edition of NOW, Lawrence Lessig suggested a new type of some-rights registration. Creative Commons is non-profit organization publishing works under a voluntary "some rights reserved" copyright, thus making works free for futher creative use. Yahoo has developed a specific search engine to locate these works. This model is being adopted by many countries. It is also being developed for music. PEN International PEN is an association of prominent literary writers and editors; major concerns are freedom of expression & contemporary literature. This page, hosted by English PEN, contains links to PEN chapters throughout the world. International Affiliation of Writers Guilds A confederation of the primary writers guilds, mainly covering film and television. The guilds work together to protect and serve the interests of audio-visual writers worldwide, providing common representation in international venues. IAWG has no dedicated website of its own at the moment.
